MP Züleyha Gülüm defends the social, economic, housing and life rights of Trans Women and LGBTI Individuals in the Turkish Grand National Assembly and in every field.

MP Züleyha Gülüm presented her research proposals for LGTBI Rights to the Turkish Grand National Assembly and boldly argued that the right to life of Trans Women and LGBTI Individuals should be protected.

MP Züleyha Gülüm says that LGBTI individuals in Turkey are exposed to hate crimes, violence, stigmatization and discrimination in all areas of life because of their sexual orientation and gender identity.

LGBTI individuals in Turkey are driven to suicide, deprived of education, and cannot benefit from their right to health, justice and social services.

It is reflected in the reports of LGBTI Individuals and non-governmental organizations in the field of human rights that LGBTI Individuals in Turkey face serious obstacles and are discriminated against in their working lives by violating their fundamental human rights to work.

These reports on the working conditions of LGBTI Individuals; reveals that discrimination based on gender identity, sexual orientation and gender characteristics is a serious obstacle in accessing the right to work in both the public and private sectors. Unemployment is widespread among LGBTI individuals and employees, and the fear of being laid off and not being able to find a job deepens.

It is obvious that LGBTI Individuals will face more discrimination and less chance of getting results from official channels in the face of discrimination, especially in parallel with the hate speech coming from the government and becoming widespread in the public.

Moreover, special measures and policies have not been established to protect LGBTI Individuals who have been fighting for their existence for years, as well as the non-compliance with the principle of impartial trial while prosecuting acts of violence and hate crimes targeting LGBTI Individuals, and the protection of criminals perpetrating violence against LGBTI Individuals both reveal new hate crimes against LGBTI Individuals and deepens the discrimination they are exposed to in their working life.

Deputy Züleyha Gülüm Preventing all kinds of violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, violations of LGBTI individuals’ right to life; He made a proposal to the TGNA to put an end to gross human rights violations such as the right to freedom and security, the prohibition of torture and ill-treatment, the immunity of housing, the right to health, and the right to education.

In her research proposal submitted to the Parliament, Deputy Züleyha Gülüm states that LGBTI individuals in Turkey are exposed to hate crimes, violence, stigmatization and discrimination in all areas of life, are driven to suicide, cannot find a job, are deprived of education and rights. in terms of health because of their sexual orientation and gender identity. lack of access to justice and social services. It is reflected in the reports of LGBTI and non-governmental organizations in the field of human rights that the approaches towards trans women have reached the level of “racism”.

While describing the hate language in the Turkish media, Deputy Züleyha Gülüm says that instead of playing a positive role in solving social problems and socializing peace, the media in Turkey unfortunately generally uses a language that incites violence, discrimination, hatred, sexism and xenophobia.

The impunity of the said divisive and hostile hate speeches used in the media causes this language to become more and more widespread. As a result of the hostile and discriminatory language used especially against LGBTI individuals, attacks that amount to violation of the right to life take place, leading to the growth of hatred, the establishment of prejudice and hate crimes.

LGBTI Individuals are marginalized and discriminated against because of their gender identity and sexual orientation, using ambiguous expressions such as “general morals”, “national and spiritual values”, and “Turkish family structure”. The problems experienced by LGBTI Individuals, who are currently experiencing serious problems in accessing their rights and whose life rights, especially the right to life, are systematically violated, are deepened by hate and discriminatory discourses in the media, and prejudices are destroyed.

Research shows that discrimination and hate speech in the media against LGBTI+s progress in parallel with the statements and practices of the Government and public officials.

In particular, the Government’s practices and statements targeting the fundamental rights and freedoms of LGBTI Individuals, smear campaigns shaped around the Istanbul Convention, and practices such as the Governorships’ bans on LGBTI Pride Week and Parade in various cities show that there is a conscious, ideological and systematic approach towards LGBTI Individuals. Therefore, the anti-LGBTI opposition institutionalized at all levels of the state has also found its reflection in the media.
