Shocked surgeons have removed 26 coins from the stomach of a man who swallowed them decades ago when he was a young child.

The unnamed 25-year-old patient from the village of Ivanovka was operated on by a surgeon in Rostov, in Russia, after developing an ulcer and beginning to bleed internally.

Newsflash obtained a statement from the Russian Ministry of Health for the Rostov Region and from the Rostov State Medical University on 28th March saying: “During a business trip to the Kherson region, a Rostov State Medical University surgeon as part of the Preventive Patrol team performed an emergency operation in the village of Ivanovka and saved a person.

“The man was taken to hospital by ambulance with stomach bleeding due to an open ulcer, which later turned into profuse bleeding. Rostov colleagues were called to help, who provided outpatient appointments and medical examinations while staying in the hospital around the clock.”

The surgeon said: “The situation was complicated by massive acute blood loss – about three litres of blood. We visualised the ulcer, sutured it, and stopped the bleeding.

“And when we were ready to suture the stomach, during inspection of the fundus we felt foreign bodies.”

The statement said: “And they took out from there… a bunch of coins, they counted 26 pieces.

“It turned out that as a child the man had swallowed coins the size of our five-ruble coins.

“The operation was successfully completed. Already in the morning, the patient was transferred from intensive care to the ward.”
