Turkish Doctor Removes Over 14,000 Gallstones From Patient In 90 Minutes

These images show how a Turkish doctor reportedly removed over 14,000 gallstones from a farmer’s body in about 90 minutes.

The doctor, who has been named as general surgery specialist Vahit Mutlu, operated on patient Kemal Dogru, 64, at the Tokat State Hospital, which is located in the city of Tokat, in the province of the same name, in the north-central Turkish region of Anatolia.

The patient was reportedly hospitalised some 40 days ago after complaining of chronic abdominal pain.

The procedure reportedly went smoothly and Dogru, who is a farmer and a married father of two from the village of Kemalpasa, in Tokat Province, is reportedly doing much better after he was at first allegedly misdiagnosed with jaundice at another hospital.

The operation reportedly took place at the end of February and it only took Dr Mutlu just over an hour half to remove the 14,387 gallstones, all in various sizes, from the man’s body.

The doctor reportedly said that he is applying to Guinness World Records for a title, having had the procedure to remove the gallstones witnessed by a notary public.

Dr Mutlu said: “When we counted them, we realised that we exceeded the 8,422 [gallstones] in Malatya [also in Turkey], which was the world record before.”

He also reportedly said: “At first sight, I knew that the amount of the stones would be a world record.”

But Guinness, in fact, lists the current record holder as an unnamed 85-year-old woman who was operated on at Worthing Hospital in West Sussex in August 1987, whereupon doctors removed 25,530 gallstones from her body.
