A man accused of starving more than 1,000 pooches to death has been seized by police after a horrified animal lover stumbled across a sickening dog death camp.
Investigators found corpses piled on top of other corpses on the floor of the suburban home in Yangpyeong County, in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea.
Disturbing images of the carnage – shared online by Coexistence of Animal Rights on Earth (CARE) – show emaciated bodies on the floor of a large dog cage.
Some appear to have been partially eaten by other dogs to stay alive.
Underneath them, reports local media, is another level of dogs that had starved to death earlier.
A man in his 60s – unnamed by local media – was arrested on Saturday, 4th March and is now facing animal cruelty charges.
Local media reports that the suspect worked as a dog disposal service for animal breeders whose studs and bitches were too old to have more pups.
It is unclear, however, whether the dogs came from commercial pet breeders or from
farms where dogs are bred for meat, considered a delicacy in South Korea.
Police believe the suspect was paid KRW 10,000 (GBP 6.40) a head to starve the animals to death rather than pay for a vet to put them down painlessly.
The dog house of horror was discovered by a shocked animal lover who stumbled across it while looking for their own missing pet pooch.
Astonishingly, four dogs were found alive amid the carcasses and are being treated at a local clinic.
All the rescued dogs were reported to be suffering from skin disease and malnutrition, with two of them in critical condition.
The investigation is ongoing.
