Outrage Over Zebra Filmed Eating Own Faeces In Zoo

This is the heartbreaking moment a zebra in a zoo is seen apparently eating its own faeces because of an alleged lack of food for the animals being kept there.

The disturbing scenes were reportedly recorded at the San Juan de Aragon zoo, in the city of Mexico City, the Mexican capital and were shared by the organisation Peludos Al Aire En Sintonia Por Los Que No Tienen Voz (Hairy Ones In The Air In Tune With Those That Don’t Have A Voice).

In the video, the zebra, named in reports as Karo, can be seen inside in the zoo and it appears to be eating its own faeces from the floor.

The organisation claims the animals in the zoo are dying from a lack of food, writing on social media: “There is not much time, they are dying of starvation, what part don’t you understand? It is important to get rid of incompetent workers and for the animals to be attended.”

The zebra is also suffering from injuries in its body

The organisation claims many of the animals are in bad health conditions, saying the zebra in the video is suffering from a skin condition and that wildebeest died there last week. The organisation says that workers also complained about the deaths of another 10 animals.

The zoo’s management are yet to comment on the case but Mexico City’s incumbent mayor, Claudia Sheinbaum, reportedly admitted that the last time the government had invested in the zoo was during the first half of the 2000-2006 administration.

The situation of other animals in the zoo

She said that there are specialists working in the zoo in order to avoid the animals being abused and to check up on their living conditions.

She said that there will be an investment in the zoo next year after the local government announced a cut in the funding for zoos earlier this year. San Juan de Aragon zoo is said to have suffered several budget cuts this year under the local government’s austerity programme.
