Participants at a winter festival in China carve out a massive snow sculpture in the shape of a dragon to honour the coming year of the dragon.
The video shows competitors at the 36th annual Harbin Sun Island International Snow Sculpture Art Expo in China’s northernmost Heilongjiang Province, hacking away the thick snow to create a dragon on 9th December.
Sixteen participating sculptors reportedly spent seven days and a total of 2,200 cubic metres of snow to create the jaw-dropping sculpture named ‘Dragon Soars and Fortune Abounds’, according to Chinese media.
Standing at 17 metres in height (55 feet), 16 metres (52 feet) in length, and another nine metres in width (29 feet). The mesmerising figure is hoped to bring people good fortune in the new year.
According to the Chinese zodiac, 2024 is the ‘Year Of the Dragon’. And is expected to bring growth, success, prosperity, and abundance.

Netizens on the Chinese version of Tiktok, Douyin, were left in awe after videos of the fascinating sculpture were shared on the platform.
Douyin user ‘Duoduo’ said: “So exciting and beautiful.”
User ‘Guang’ commented: “I admire the skillful craftsman.”
And ‘Zpr’ added: “This is what the Chinese dragon should look like if it can be the mascot of the Spring Festival Gala.”
The international winter festival where sculptors from all around the world are free to demonstrate their artistic skill set. Is held each year on Sun Island Park from January to February.
