Christie’s will host one of the largest known cut black diamonds in the world in the greatest ever European exhibition of renowned jewellery artist Wallace Chan.
The fascinating black diamond shoulder brooch named ‘Legend of the Colour Black’ will be shown among 150 pieces of jewellery and six other titanium sculptures between 4th and 10th September.
Weighing a total of 312.24 carats, the impressive centre stone of the piece is reportedly adorned with silver grey diamonds, a crystal sapphire, a black agate and titanium.
It additionally contains the Wallace Chan Porcelain – considered to be five times stronger than steel – which the famous Chinese artist spent years developing.
The exhibition named ‘The Wheel of Time’ will reportedly be the largest European showcase of Chan’s creations and celebrate his five-decade-long career.
It will also be the British auction house’s fifth collaboration with the jewellery creator following several successful shows in Hong Kong in 2015 and 2019, followed by Shanghai in 2020 and 2021.
With the majority of works on loan from Chan’s collectors, some of the pieces have never been seen publicly, claimed Christie’s.
The highlights of the show will also include several of Chan’s signature butterfly designs, among which the ‘Joy of Life’ brooch, made of pink sapphires, blue sapphires, tsavorite garnets, white diamonds, yellow diamonds, pearls, and titanium.
Wallace Chan said in a statement obtained by Newsflash from Christie’s: “In the blink of an eye, half a century has flown by.
“I am humbled by the opportunity to present my largest exhibition in Europe at Christie’s in London.
“My heartfelt thanks go to Christie’s for supporting my creative journey throughout the years and across the globe.
“I am also grateful to my long term collectors for loaning the pieces, without their friendship the exhibition would not be possible.
“Time is an eternal wheel that rotates for infinity with neither beginning nor end. In the creative process, time is a theme so intangible, yet omnificent.”
Christie’s Private Sales Director Mei Y Giam said: “We are delighted to bring Wallace Chan’s imagination to London and present this unique exhibition celebrating five decades of artistic excellence.
“Our fifth collaboration with Chan reaffirms Christie’s longstanding relationship with the artist, and we look forward to welcoming visitors to the exhibition.”
The auction house’s Chairman in Europe Francois Curiel said: “A deeply philosophical man, Wallace infuses his jewels with Oriental spiritualism.
“This is the motif which he spends his entire creative life interpreting and reinterpreting, experimenting with endless combinations of gemstones, mediums, styles, aesthetics, and executed in his world-renowned techniques.”
Christie’s CEO Guillaume Cerutti added: “Christie’s is committed to supporting great artists and the evolution of their work.
