These images show some of the 45 dogs and puppies that were found in horrific conditions in the Canary Islands, with their skin emaciated and various injuries including tumours and ulcers all over their bodies.
The incident took place in the municipality of Arucas, on the island of Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands in Spain, when the police raided the property and even found a dog that had just given birth to six puppies and dogs sleeping in their own excrement because the chains used to tie them up were too short.
The Spanish Civil Guard said in a statement obtained by Newsflash that it had rescued “39 dogs and six puppies, which were in small, precarious rooms and without the minimum necessary care that would provide them with a normal development, despite the fact that vaccines and microchips are mandatory.
“One person has been arrested and another is being investigated for continued animal abuse.”
The two people have not been identified.
The police said they had intervened after receiving a tip-off from “a citizen”, who has not been named, but who reportedly said that a large number of dogs “could be lacking the minimum resources to satisfy their vital needs”.
Many of the dogs were found to be extremely thin and lacking even the strength to stand on their feet. They were all stuffed into tiny kennels made of pieces of wood, the cops said.
The police said that the dogs were mostly Podenco Canarios, which are a local breed of dog from the Canary Islands. They are primarily used for pack-hunting rabbits and other small animals.
They found a female dog “that had just given birth to six puppies a few days old”.
Most of the animals showed signs of malnutrition and visible wounds, with most of them tied up with iron chains that were no longer than 80 centimetres (31 inches) long. There was nowhere for the dogs to relieve themselves, with the cops saying they were forced to sleep in their own excrement.
The authorities also said the “animals had untreated fleshy tumours and one of them even had an ulcerous wound that crossed the cheek from the inside of the mouth.”
The police said the dogs were being evaluated by vets and that the case has been handed over to the courts.
