Kylu the beluga whale (Delphinapterus leucas) has turned six and now weighs over 500 kilogrammes, the Oceanografic de Valencia said in a statement on 15th November.

The oceanarium in southern Spain also said: “Like every November 15, the Valencian Oceanographic is celebrating, since Kylu, the beluga calf, turns 6 years old. To celebrate, her caregivers have prepared a big party for her, including a jelly and ice cake, the little one’s favourite ingredients.”

They added: “During these six years, Kylu has been learning from his environment. The constant games with his mother, Yulka, together with the daily work of the keepers, who stimulate him through caresses and direct contact, have allowed the veterinary team of the aquarium, located in the Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciencies, to check him every day to ensure your well-being.”

The oceanarium explained that teamwork has been essential to ensure that Kylu remains healthy, saying that he “eats about 25 kilos of fish a day”.

They added: “The day-to-day with him is based on play, stimulation and learning so that he voluntarily collaborates in check-ups, analyses and veterinary controls.

“The imagination of his caregivers has no limits and they are able to provide him with toys adapted to their enrichment of the animal… such as buoys with fire hoses, “jellyfish” and “hats”, which are like a split buoy that is put on the head.

“And thanks to this work, Kylu forms a very important part of various research lines of the Fundacion Oceanografic, which can only be carried out in highly controlled centres such as the OceanogrĂ fic de Valencia.”
