The Son Of Che Guevara Dies After A Heart Attack During A Visit To Venezuela

The son of the Argentine-Cuban revolutionary figure, Che Guevara, has died at the age of 60 after a heart attack in Venezuela.

Camilo Guevara March was the eldest son of Ernesto Guevara de la Serna, or Che Guevara, a high-profile guerrilla warfare strategist who was a communist leader during the Cuban Revolution (which lasted from 1953 to 1959, with Guevara directly involved from 1956 to 1959).

A strong advocate of his father’s legacy, March was four years old when his father was captured and executed by the Bolivian Army backed by CIA advisers in 1967.

The sixty-year-old died after suffering from a pulmonary thromboembolism that led to a heart attack while visiting Venezuela’s capital city, Caracas, on Tuesday 30th August, according to local media reports.

His death was confirmed by the president of Cuba, Miguel Diaz Canel in a Twitter post the same day.

It reads: “With deep sorrow we say goodbye to Camilo, Che’s son and a promotor of his ideas.”

In another tweet, Adan Chavez, the Venezuelan ambassador to Cuba and brother of former President Hugo Chavez, described his grief at the loss of the sixty-year-old father and husband who was a lawyer by profession and the director of the Che Centre, which is dedicated to promoting the revolutionist’s work and is responsible for storing personal archives related to the leader.

The ambassador described March as: “An extraordinary companion and promoter of the study and preservation of his father’s legacy.”

Camilo was the product of a union between Che Guevara and Aleida March Torres, 85, who was an active member of Fidel Castro’s Cuban Army and had four children with Guevara.
