An astonished Icelandic football club has told how it was left more than GBP 1.1 million by a fan in his will.
Follower Guomundar Eggert Oskarsson left the sum to Breioablik, which he had supported for decades.
The 88-year-old superfan – a former treasurer of the club – left the ISK 200-million legacy in his will.
The sports club offers chess, basketball, swimming and taekwondo, but the legacy was left solely to the football team.
The squad was formed in 1957 and has been a semi-permanent fixture in the Icelandic top league.
They played their first international match in 2010 against Scotland’s Motherwell in the Europa league.
In a statement announcing the donation, the club said: “One of those who died this year is Guomundur Eggert Oskarsson.
“Guomundur was born on April 29, 1935, lived all his life in Kopavogur and took an active part in various social issues in the young and growing town, in addition to working for a long time at Kopavogur marketplace.
“Guomundur worked for years for the football league, among other things as treasurer, and was made an honorary member of Breioablik in 1990.
“Guomundur bequeathed in his will just about ISK 200 million to Breioablik’s football department.
“The funds are intended to support the football league, and it is specifically stated that ‘the amount inherited shall be divided equally between the men’s and women’s leagues’.
“This generous gift will be used by the department to promote the work of the football department, but it is not expected that the funds will be used for direct operations, but for individual projects and the development of the work of the Breioablik football department.”
