A Turkish sniffer dog has enjoyed a day out at the beach to celebrate its retirement after taking part in a thousand drugs operations.
Chiara worked for the Narcotics Branch of the police department in the city of Aydin in the western Turkish province of the same name.
Her retirement was announced on the official Twitter page of the General Security Directorate along with images of the happy-looking dog on the beach and swimming in the sea.
The post read: “Chiara has retired. Our sniffer dog Chiara, who participated in nearly a thousand operations with our Aydin Narcotics Branch Directorate, handed over her badge to Tina (replacement pooch).
“We wish Chiara a happy life with her trainer Abdullah Kurt, who will take care of her in retirement.”
According to national newspaper TRT Haber, Chiara played a key role in an important operation where 1.5 tons of drugs were seized in 2018.
According to her trainer Kurt, Chiara has an incredibly sensitive sense of smell which gave confidence to the narcotic teams for years.
Kurt said “She could have retired two years ago, but continued when her performance did not diminish. The incredible thing about her is that she can easily pick up hidden stashes, for example in a fire extinguisher or loudspeakers.”
Kurt went on to say that now two-year-old Tina will take over her role and that he will take care of Chiara.
He said: “I created an emotional bond with her. I devoted a lot of time to her, as much as the time I gave my own family. I did it because she was like a family member for me. It will be hard to leave for work, but I will continue to look after her in my normal life.”
Kurt added: “Today, we brought Chiara to the seaside because she deserved the reward.”
