Search For Adventurer Hit By 3M Waves While Sailing Round The World

A Russian adventurer who went on a trip around the world venture with his yacht has gone missing near Chile after his main sail broke as he navigated huge 3m high waves.

Captain Vitaly Elagin from Gelendzhik, Krasnodar Krai, Russia, stopped answering messages on 19th March.

Vitaly had been alone in the middle of the ocean after he set off at the African port of Tangier for a trip around the world on 1st October 2023.

The Telegram channel ‘Daughter of the Wind in the Ocean’ which published posts and updates about Vitaly’s trip, said on 18th March: “Things are not going very well for the captain.”

“The mainsail broke. It’s unclear whether he fixed it or whether he can fix it or not. Going on jib to Cape Horn.

“Go through it and maybe make a stop.

“Yesterday I was in the mood to give up and stop at the nearest port, but there are difficulties with entry everywhere.”

The last known location of the yacht ‘Daughter of the Wind’ is Cape Horn in Chile and dates back to 19th March.

But after the weather in the area worsened, the wind rose, and the wave reached 3.2 metres, the yacht did not send an SOS signal.

It was said on the blog that the Rusarc Aurora yacht came to help.

A post said: “RusArc now knows better what to do, they are on site and in contact with coastal services and ships.

“Not only Aurora is involved there, the entire RusArc staff has joined in full force.”

And an update from today, 22nd March, said: “There is no positive news. The plane found nothing the second time.

“All vessels in the area have been notified and the search will continue. Let’s not lose hope.”
