Rescuers Free Wide-Eyed Bird From Washing Machine

These images show a googly-eyed bird trapped inside a home washing machine after the owner woke up and was stunned to find it sleeping there.

The bizarre incident took place at a home in the municipality of Araguari, in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, last week.

According to local reports, the homeowner left the lid of the washing machine open at night and went to bed.

The following morning, the homeowner went to hang out the washing and was stunned to see the bird fast asleep inside the top-loader machine, apparently after flying in during the night and becoming trapped.

A potoo that was spotted inside a washing machine was rescued by the fire brigade in Araguari, Brazil, on 22nd March 2022.

The bird has been identified as a common potoo (Nyctibius griseus), also known as poor-me-ones and locally dubbed a ‘ghost bird’.

Firefighters called to the scene rescued the large bird and released it back into the wild.

The Araguari Fire Department said on social media: “At around 1 pm, we were called to a wild animal capture event on Rua Avara in the centre.

“There, a potoo was inside the washing machine. According to the homeowner, she left the machine lid up the night before and when she came back in the morning to lay out the clothes, the bird was in there, sleeping.

“The animal was rescued unharmed and released in a reserve area.”

The fire department added: “Firefighters: the right friend in uncertain times.”
