Meet the 90-year-old Japanese grandmother who is still working at McDonald’s after 23 years and plans to keep going until she turns 100.
Japanese media have reported that Tamiko Honda is the oldest woman of Japan’s190,000 McDonald’s employees.
Honda starts work every day at 7:30am after taking the bus from her home in the Nish Ward of Kumamoto City, on the island of Kyushu, in southern Japan.
She works three hours, five days a week, cleaning the McDonald’s and is reportedly full of energy despite being 90 years old.
She told local media that she loves it when customers thank her for cleaning, saying it brings her great joy and satisfaction.
Store manager Hiromi Ushijima said: “Mrs Honda is an indispensable presence in the store because she always works hard with a smile.”
Honda – who is also reportedly known as the “Genki-grandma” in an apparent reference to ‘Genkidama’, the most powerful move performed by Goku, the main protagonist in the Dragon Ball manga, which requires huge amounts of energy – said that the key to her longevity is having a positive mindset.
She said that talking with people regularly and exercising, while ending each day feeling grateful for being able to do her job, all help her keep her spirit lively and vivacious.
Despite her family reportedly urging her to retire, Honda reportedly plans to work until she is 100.
