On the day Jean Carlos was hit by the vehicle, he had gone to hospital with his expectant partner to be by her side as she gave birth.

It was shortly after the young woman gave birth to a baby boy that the beaming dad popped out to get some food – and tragedy struck.

The 72-year-old driver, who was uninjured, provided help at the scene. It was not divulged if he was at fault for the accident or if he was investigated by the police.

The young man’s sister, Dara Ribeiro, said: “They spoke all the time about the high risk of death at any moment, the blow to his head was very serious. The hope [that he would recover] was huge, we really wanted him here so he could raise his children.”

On the donation of his organs, Dara said: “There will be little pieces of him here on Earth saving lives.”

Jean Carlos leaves behind his partner, newborn son and another son, aged three.
