A huge 40-foot deep sinkhole has suddenly appeared in a small Mexican village.

The 12-metre wide sinkhole appeared in Pinzan Morado in the borough of Coyuca de Catalan located in the south-western Mexican state of Guerrero before concerned residents called the Civil Protection to inspect the site.

According to official sources, the sinkhole is 15 metres (49 feet) deep with a diameter of 12 metres (39 feet) and is positioned on mining land with a community of houses just 500 metres (1,640 feet) from where it appeared.

The local authorities are currently inspecting the area to make sure it is safe for residents to remain in their homes.

Another huge sinkhole appeared in the same community in August 2018 which affected two schools and several houses.

At the time, affected families had to be evacuated until the authorities decided that it was safe for them to return.

With the emergence of a new hole, the Civil Protection have confirmed that the local community is their top priority as they investigate the site and determine the probability of more appearing.

The checks are still ongoing.
