Customs Detain Female Passenger After 448 Live Hermit Crabs Discovered In Bizarre Smuggling Attempt

Female passenger is detained by customs for attempting to smuggle 448 live hermit crabs into China.

Customs officials conducted routine inspections on arriving passengers on international flights landing at Dalian Zhoushuizi Airport, in Liaoning province, in China, on 20th July.

During the process of supervising inbound travellers, the officers observed an anomaly in the luggage of one passenger who had chosen to pass through the undeclared channel. The inspection image indicated the presence of live animals.

Customs officers proceeded to unpack the suitcase for further examination. Inside, they discovered multiple red net bags. Upon closer inspection, it was revealed that these bags contained a total of 448 live hermit crabs.

Following the discovery, the customs authorities transferred the batch of hermit crabs to the appropriate department for further processing.

The situation highlighted a violation of several regulatory frameworks within the country, specifically the “Biosafety Law” and the “Law on Entry and Exit Animal and Plant Quarantine,” which prohibit the carriage or mailing of live animals into the country without the required approvals.

As a result of this infraction, customs officials indicated that legal liability would be pursued in accordance with established laws and regulations.
