Goofy 66lb Husky Leaping From Terrace Paralyses Owner

A pensioner has been left paralysed from the neck down after his loving husky was so delighted to see him that it jumped on him from a second-floor window.

The owner, surnamed Liu, 67, is now unable to move any of his limbs and can only talk from his bed at the First People’s Hospital of Chenzhou City in Central China’s Hunan Province.

Liu and his family, who are from the neighbouring city of Yongzhou, returned home during the Chinese New Year period, and were met by the overly excited husky who weighs more than 30 kilogrammes (66 lbs).

“As soon as it saw me, it jumped from the second floor terrace,” Liu said, adding: “I’ve raised it for a few months. It loves me.”

The pensioner’s daughter commented: “My dad thought a wall had collapsed on him. He didn’t realised it was the dog.”

Doctor Wang Yuansong said the pooch dislocated its owner’s cervical vertebrae, bruising his spine in the process, but added it was too early to see if the damage was permanent.

He said surgery was needed that they were hopeful would see the use of his lower body.

The medic said: “He came home and his dog, which was apparently excited to see him, jumped from the second floor and landed on his right shoulder and neck area.

“Besides obvious neck pain, the patient also found himself unable to move his limbs.

“We plan to shift his cervical vertebrae back in place, but we will need up to three months to see if it works and he can recover.”

Wang’s colleague, spinal surgery professor Tong Jie, said: “I’ve never ever seen a dog cause such an injury.”

The pensioner has refused to blame his beloved husky, but has decided to keep the dog chained to the terrace in order to avoid a similar incident.
