5 Cases Of Mutant COVID Strain Confirmed In Southern Spain

Officials in southern Spain have reported five cases of the new COVID-19 variant on patients who had all recently travelled to the United Kingdom.

Government officials from the southern Spanish autonomous community of Andalusia broke the news yesterday (28 December).

The five new cases that were confirmed to be of the new variant, which is known for being more infectious, are found spread out across two provinces.

Three were reported in the province of Malaga and two in the province of Granada while a further four cases are under investigation in Malaga.

Juanma Moreno, president of the Regional Government of Andalusia, revealed that all five people confirmed to have the new strain had all travelled to the United Kingdom and went on to ask the national government for more control at airports.

However, despite the new cases, Moreno plans to keep the restrictions already in place which will allow people to celebrate New Year’s with their loved ones until 1.30am.

The first cases of the new virus variant in Spain were found in the autonomous community of Madrid where there were four confirmed patients reported on 26th December, according to the local newspaper 20 minutos. (https://bit.ly/3rCwRwY)
