This 45-year-old woman has given birth to her own twin grandchildren after carrying the tots in her womb so that her gay son could become a dad.
Valdira das Neves, 45, gave birth to twins Noah and Maria Flor on 3rd September in the Clinical Hospital of Ribeirao Preto in the south-eastern Brazilian state of Sao Paulo. The twins’ father is Valdira’s son Marcelo das Neves Junior, 24, whose sperm was used to artificially inseminate the ovaries of an anonymous donor.

Marcelo’s mother agreed to be a “solidarity belly” for her son’s children as she knew he always wanted to be a father and was gay.
The grandmother, who is a teacher, lost a baby at the age of 41 and began searching for a fertilisation clinic as she knew her chances of becoming pregnant at that age were slim.
During the search for a clinic, Marcelo found out that he could become a father through artificial insemination and suggested to his mother that she could gestate the ovaries of a younger mother, increasing the chances of her becoming pregnant to 50 percent.

Anderson Melo, the gynaecologist, said that the main obstacle was in the fertilisation process due to the difficulty of fixing the embryo in the uterus. After three failed attempts, she became pregnant in January 2019.
Maria Flor was born weighing 2.25 kilogrammes (4.9 lbs) while Noah weighed 2.19 kilogrammes (4.8 lbs). Noah was taken to the Intensive Care Unit in the hospital for unreported reasons after the birth but father Marcelo told reporters “he will be with us later”.
The twins have a room in Marcelo’s house painted for them when they leave the hospital.
