These two young and healthy brothers have died from coronavirus within 24 hours of each other.
The tragic incident took place in the village of Yizhivtsi in the Chernivtsi Oblast region of western Ukraine when Andrey Frunza, 19, and Ivan Frunza, 24, who was to marry next month were both hospitalised with COVID-19.
Local media report they are believed to have contracted the virus after their elder brother, who worked with Ivan in Belgium, returned home.
When the elder brother’s symptoms became clear he was placed into a two-week isolation. He was prescribed drugs and his condition then improved, but his two brothers and father then began showing symptoms of COVID-19.
Doctors prescribed the trio the same drugs as the elder brother, but they showed no improvement and were hospitalised.
Andrey and Ivan both entered hospital on 19th April in a serious condition, with Andrey dying on the morning of the 20th and his brother the following day.
Their father Aurel remains in hospital and reportedly does not know of his sons’ deaths.
Anatoly Pitsul, the head of the Chiudeyskaya commune which includes the village the brothers are from, said the pair were strong and healthy men.
He said: “These were healthy and strong men. They worked on construction sites and had built a house for themselves as well. The whole commune is mourning. Ivan had planned his marriage for May this year.”
The brother’s grandmother, who has not been named in reports, is also hospitalised with COVID-19, according to reports.
According to the latest figures from the Johns Hopkins University, Ukraine has registered 7,647 cases of COVID-19, and 193 deaths.
