Moment Rare Maned Wolf Runs Through Brazil Shopping Centre

This is the moment a rare maned wolf runs through a shopping centre in Brazil as two women laugh in surprise.

The unusual scene was filmed by a worker at the Jatahy Shopping Centre in the municipality of Jatai in the west-central Brazilian state of Goias in the early hours of 19th November.

The woman filming can be heard saying “it’s a wolf” as she chuckles with her colleague at the bizarre sight.

Shopping centre director Cicero Santana told local media: “We instructed our team at the time to call the fire brigade to rescue the animal and return it to its natural habitat, but unfortunately there wasn’t time. He came and went in a flash.”

Vet Luana Borboleta studied the footage and identified the animal as a young maned wolf.

The maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus) is the largest canine in South America and is considered “near threatened” as populations are declining.

They are at risk from habitat loss, which is increasingly driving the animals into urban areas.

They are also at risk of being run over by road vehicles, and being attacked by feral and domestic dogs.

The maned wolf is depicted on the new 200 BRL (27.9 GBP) banknote released in September 2020.

They are not considered dangerous to humans.
