Green Activist, 21, Shot Dead During Lockdown in Mexico

This 21-year-old environmental activist has been found shot dead on his family ranch during COVID-19 lockdown.

Biology student Eugui Roy Martinez Perez, who was self-isolating alone at the ranch in the municipality of San Agustin Loxicha in the south-western Mexican state of Oaxaca, was found dead by neighbours on 7th May.

His sister Rosalinda Martinez told local media: “My brother decided to stay at the ranch during quarantine, collecting insects, studying, writing magazine articles and his personal blog as well as taking care of the livestock.

“However, on Thursday 7th May, neighbours found him on the ground, covered in blood and without vital signs.”

Rosalinda and other environmentalists have demanded justice for the biology student’s alleged murder and they called on state governor Alejandro Murat and public prosecutor Ruben Vasconcelo to find out more about the case.

The victim was a member of the conservation group ‘Biologgers Divulgacion de las Ciencias y la Naturaleza’ (biological Bloggers For The Dissemination of Science and Nature) and he often carried out studies in the mountainous region.

His death has reportedly sparked outrage in the area and protests have taken place calling for his killers to be brought to justice.

The investigation is ongoing and so far no arrests have been made.
