This is the moment Spanish cops in the Canary Islands arrest a fugitive wanted by the British authorities for the murder of two police officers in Glasgow.
Officers from the Spanish National Police arrested the man, named as John K., 40, from Scotland, in the town of Adeje, in the south-western Spanish province of Tenerife, in the Canary Islands.
He had a European Arrest Warrant in his name which had been requested by the British authorities for the murder of two cops, belonging to a criminal gang and causing injury.
He allegedly broke into a police station in Glasgow in 2006 and shot a cop, killing him. Ten years later, in 2016, the suspect, along with other unnamed accomplices, allegedly shot another cop, killing him too. He is also being investigated for his links to six other murders, according to reports.
Local media report he burned two vehicles in 2018 and managed to escape arrest.
A police press statement said the investigation into the fugitive started months ago when the UK’s National Crime Agency warned the national police in Spain about the possible presence of the man in Spain.
The UK and Spanish authorities cooperated in the investigation and found the man living in Tenerife province, 20 minutes away from a beach.
A police spokesperson told Central European News (CEN) that the arrest took place around November 2019 but the video and the information of the arrest have only recently been released. The spokesperson added: “As usual with international fugitives, the British authorities reported the presence of the fugitive in our country and the international fugitives unit started the investigation.”
It has not been confirmed if the suspect will be extradited to the UK but the spokesperson for the Spanish National Police said it is believed he will be extradited.
The arrest took place during a surveillance operation in the block of flats where he lived.
They saw a man matching his description and arrested him as he was in a supermarket after identifying him, as can be seen in the video.
The operation is ongoing and three other alleged members of his gang have been arrested in the UK.
