German Police Under Investigation For Accepting Bribe Of Country’s Favourite Food – Curried Sausages

Police officers in Germany are being investigated on the suspicion they were bribed to write a favourable review of a police training programme – by accepting sausages.

Seventeen police officers in Hanover are being targeted by the public prosecutor’s office because they were regularly invited to eat currywurst, a typically German dish made up of curry and sausage, at a restaurant, for free.

Oliver Eisenhauer, press spokesman for the Hanover public prosecutor’s office, told local media: “A speaker from a state company is said to have invited the police officers to eat currywurst in a well-known restaurant after a training session.”

The arrangement, involving the 17 officers from Lower Saxony’s Central Police Directorate, is said to have gone on for about 10 months, with the public prosecutor saying that it amounts to a bribe of EUR 2,000 (GBP 1,700).

Eisenhauer added: “We are currently assuming that he (the person paying) was hoping for positive reviews of his lessons through the invitations.”

The public prosecutor’s office added: “That could be the case, and that is why we are obliged to examine it.”

The investigation into the potential corruption case is ongoing.
