This former Mexican mayor has been murdered by a gang of armed men who shot him dead in the middle of a road close to the city hall.
The murder happened this Monday in the municipality of Paso del Macho in the state of Veracruz in southeastern Mexico.
According to local media former Mayor Rafael Pacheco Molina who had previously been the head of the municipality of Paso del Macho for three consecutive terms was stopped by a gang of several armed men who shot him dead two blocks away from the city hall and escaped.
The local police came to the place to confirm the death and transferred the victim’s body to the Forensic Medical Service (Semefo) to the city of Cordoba in the state of Veracruz.
The motive of the murder is still unknown as local authorities are still investigating the case.
The State Security Secretary confirmed that several police brigades had been deployed and wrote in a public statement: “The police deployment is meant to support the investigation to clarify the circumstances that led to the murder of Rafael Pacheco Molina on Monday morning”
The leader of the social-democratic Party of the Democratic Revolution (PDR) Angel Avila condemned the murder on Twitter and demanded justice for the murder.
According to local media, Mayor Marcela Valleja Orea of the municipality of Mixtla de Altamirano in the state of Veracruz was also murdered in an ambush in the road where her husband and their driver also died.
