Cops Bust Grandpa Crime Gang Of Three With Combined Age Of 227

Japanese police have busted a grandpa crime gang whose members have a combined age of 227.

The trio reportedly met in prison and then proceeded to plot a number of burglaries before breaking into a home.

Hideo Umino, 88, Hidemi Matsuda, 70, and Kenichi Watanabe, 69, were arrested after they broke into a house in Sapporo, on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido in May.

They stand accused of stealing JPY 200 (GBP 1) in cash and three bottles of whiskey worth JPY 10,000 (GBP 50.57).

They then broke into another home in June and stole jewellery worth JPY 1 million (GBP 5,000).

The trio made headlines in Japan after the police gave them the codename ‘G3S’, which is homophonic for grandpas in Japanese.

The police say that Umino, the oldest of the trio, was in charge of carrying out the burglaries while Matsuda was in charge of being the getaway driver.

The youngest of the gang, Watanabe, was responsible for handling the stolen goods.

Local media said that the men are so old that they needed the police to physically support them while they arrested them.

The police are investigating their potential involvement in 10 other burglaries in the region.
