A cop has been arrested for allegedly killing this transvestite woman who was shot six times in the chest while she was doing sex work in the area.
The suspect was arrested in the Argentine city of Godoy Cruz located in the province of Mendoza yesterday (Thursday).
He is identified as Dario Jesus Chavez Rubio, 31, and is an officer at the Mendoza Police station 34.
He is suspected of murdering a transvestite woman named Melody Barrera, 27, in the early hours of Saturday 29th August.
She was offering sexual services on a street when a Volkswagen Bora with a gunman shot her six times on her thorax and left her for dead on the pavement.
Authorities have located evidence incriminating Chavez including security cameras potentially linking his vehicle to the murder, geopositioning from mobile towers that place him in the area at the time of the crime and a key statement from a witness.
Authorities are no investigating his service weapon and some clothes found in his home.
The witness claims Chavez said he was going to “look for a gun to shoot up the transvestite”. Police are also looking into whether the two knew each other previously.
The suspect is being investigated for aggravated homicide because of the suggestion it was gender-based as well as an alternate charge of aggravated homicide with a deadly weapon, and also the lesser offence of violating the security measures instated by the government to fight COVID-19.
There have been no reports on what could have motivated him.
The investigations are ongoing and it is unclear if Chavez will be taken to trial.
