China Announces Completion Of World’s Longest Arch Bridge As It Opens For Traffic

China has unveiled the world’s longest arch bridge which it said combines groundbreaking technology with science as it officially opened to traffic.

The Tian’e Longtan Bridge, a steel-reinforced concrete arch bridge over 600 metres (1,900 feet) long, finally completed on 1st February.

Spanning the Hongshui River, it sits on the Nantian Expressway which links Nandan County and Tian’e County of the southern Guangxi Region.

The remarkable engineering feat, with a total length of 2,488.55 metres (8,164 feet), has substantially reduced travel time between the two counties from 3.5 hours to approximately 1.5 hours.

The main bridge is a prestressed concrete arch bridge, featuring dual four-lane carriageways with a designed driving speed of 100 kilometres per hour.

Construction of the project began in December 2020.

It represents the first arch bridge globally to achieve a span exceeding 600 metres. Marking a significant milestone in the evolution of arch bridge technology.

The project focused on scientific research and technical breakthroughs in aspects such as the installation of the arch ribs of the large-span arch bridge and concrete crack prevention.

It mastered more than 10 core key technologies of large-span prestressed concrete arch bridges and has received acceptance for five patents, Chinese media reported.

Engineers have also established a monitoring command and data centre, integrating “safety supervision, data processing, on-site command, and smart office” into one.

According to Zheng Jielian, an academician with the Chinese Academy of Engineering, during the bridge’s construction. Numerous challenges were overcome and innovations were achieved, paving the way for future development of concrete arch bridges.
