Belarus President Claims Women Not Suited To Do His Job

The Belarus president has claimed that women are incapable of managing a top job like running a country as he does, because it is too hard for them, and they would most likely “collapse”.

Alexander Lukashenko, 65, dubbed ‘Europe’s last dictator’, made the comments in the run-up to the presidential elections being held in Belarus on 9th August.

Lukashenko, who is running for a sixth term in office having won every presidential election since 1994, appeared to suggest in an interview that leading Belarus would be too hard for a woman.

He said: “Our constitution is so complex that even a man can hardly handle it. But if we load it on a woman, the poor woman would collapse.”

MPs and presidential rivals slammed his comments, causing Lukashenko to explain: “They are trying to say I am against women now. I didn’t make that comment because I do not respect women, I only meant to say that it’s a difficult job.

“If it wasn’t for women, I wouldn’t be president now.”

According to local media, there are 15 candidates running to be Belarus president with three women among them.

Netizen ‘Adsky Don’ commented: “Women usually deal with difficult situations way better than men. It was quite a silly comment to make.”

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Lukashenko said that concerns about the pandemic were a “frenzy and a psychosis” and that going out in the field and working with tractors, drinking vodka and going to saunas could prevent people from infection.
