Camerman Erick Castillo Sanchez who was part of the crew on the Oscar-winning film ‘Roma’ has been shot dead on holiday during an attempted carjacking incident.
The 46-year-old cameraman, originally from the south-eastern Mexican state of Chiapas, was reportedly shot in the head by carjackers in the resort city of Acapulco in the southern state of Guerrero.
Castillo Sanchez, who worked on the Oscar-winning film ‘Roma’ (2018) with acclaimed Mexican director Alfonso Cuaron as well as numerous projects for the Discovery Channel, was holidaying in Acapulco with his wife who was with him at the time.
According to reports, the victim was with his unnamed partner in their Ford Expedition SUV when they stopped outside a shop in the Punta Diamante area.
Four armed men tried to steal the SUV and Castillo Sanchez resisted so they shot him and left his body lying on the ground before fleeing the scene, according to local media
The local authorities found the photographer’s wife in a state of shock next to the victim’s dead body.
She later said that one of the suspects told the couple “we are not going to do anything” before they then tried to carjack the SUV and she jumped out of the passenger seat.
The frightened woman ran to a nearby booth where she then reportedly heard several gunshots.
The local authorities are currently investigating the incident.
