As a result, students had to wait outside the university gates from the early hours of the morning to ensure they would get their free meal.

In the video footage, thousands of students are seen pouring through the gates and sprinting towards the dining hall to get a ticket for the slap-up feast.

This is the special meal all students wanted to have

The hectic scenes were filmed by students and uploaded to social media where over 115,000 have viewed the video, while thousands more shared it.

According to reports, the Christmas lunch included roasted chicken and potatoes, vegetables, ice cream, fruit and fizzy drinks.

Students lucky enough to claim a ticket were also treated to a special breakfast of a sweet bread known as panettone, chocolate and an apple.

The university offers the festive feast to students every Christmas, according to reports.

The students running for their lunch

Malnutrition is a problem in Peru which has a large income disparity, and where officials have created community kitchens to reduce hunger and malnutrition.

Netizen ‘Jonathan Merino’ said: “It is not funny, it is sad. It is like they have never eaten a piece of panettone before!”

‘Maria Juana Rodriguez’ commented: “Believe me, it is not hunger, it is adrenaline. The determination to get there first. It is in the DNA of anyone from San Marcos.”

‘Hector Villayzan’ wrote: “It reminds me of Black Fridays in America, but instead they are running to get a free apple!”
