Red Bull ‘To Sell Lake’ After Denying Access To The Public

Red Bull tycoon Mark Mateschitz reportedly plans to sell an estate bought by his late dad that has been dubbed the Green Lagoon for its picturesque bathing lake.

Dietrich Mateschitz, who succumbed to pancreatic cancer aged 78 in October 2022, initially acquired the 40-hectare property in the town of St. Margarethen bei Knittelfeld, Styria, Austria, to produce cobble for various construction and renovation projects at and around the nearby Red Bull Ring.

Red Bull refurbished the tradition-rich Austrian Circuit racing track outside the town of Spielberg to reopen it under its new name in 2011.

The Green Lagoon, which also featured a bathing lake open to the public, was a popular recreation area for residents of the region before Red Bull bosses controversially restricted access in 2017. Since then, only those owning houses situated directly at the lake are allowed to swim in it.

Mark Mateschitz, who inherited his dad’s EUR 26 billion (GBP 22.3 billion) estate, has ordered the property’s sale after considering it not relevant to the energy drink giant’s operations, according to local media.

The move is not expected to affect the company’s plans to build a hotel at the Red Bull Ring.

Several Austrian entrepreneurs are understood to be interested in snatching the estate for an alleged EUR 3.5 to 4 million (GBP 3 to 3.44 million).

Mateschitz, who is listed as the 35th richest person in the world by Forbes, inherited a 49 per cent stake in Red Bull.

The 31-year-old tycoon now also owns numerous luxury properties including a Fijian island. Castles in Austria and an estate in London’s exclusive Knightsbridge.

Mark Mateschitz is the son of Dietrich Mateschitz and Anita Gerhardter, a 58-year-old former ski instructor. The pair never married and were in a relationship for just two years.

Mark is in a relationship with 30-year-old model and television presenter Victoria Swarowski who is the heiress to the Austrian crystal jewellery giant Swarovski.

Red Bull did not comment on the reports about a planned sale of the Green Lagoon estate.

Red Bull is headquartered in Fuschl, Salzburg State. In 2022, the firm sold almost 11.6 billion cans worldwide, up year on year by 18.1 per cent.
