The daughter of Vladimir Putin’s press secretary has publicly criticised the state’s investigations into a prominent Russian women’s rights activist.
Elizaveta Peskova, 22, who prefers to go by Lisa, has publicly criticised the criminal investigations into feminist activist Yulia Tsvetkova.
The Russian authorities have initiated a third criminal case against Tsvetkova, who is known for making public statements against gender stereotypes and advocates for the freedom of women and their bodies.
In 2019 the police initiated the first administrative case against her for promoting non-traditional sexual relations among minors.
Tsvetkova is also part of a case into spreading porn as a moderator of the Russian-language social media group Vagina Monologues.
Paris-based Peskova, who is featured as a blogger for Russian liberal radio station Echo Moskvi, has called the case a weak attempt to protect moral and people’s values, even though she has stressed that she does not include herself in the feminist camp.
The daughter of 52-year-old press secretary Dmitry Peskov said: “I am not a supporter of feminist, body-positivist and other contemporary movements. After spending eight years living in Europe, while remaining a Russian girl, who was born in a Muslim country in a family of a specialist in the Eastern world, I came to the conclusion that my mixed mentality makes me a ‘tolerant and understanding conservative’.”
She added: “Even though most of the things that Yulia does, seem bizarre, I am deeply convinced that her misconduct and her punishment do not equal each other.
“Yes, there should be some measures against Yulia and they need to be implemented. But everything that is happening right now is a joke aimed at fighting for people’s morals, an attempt to protect some moral principles.”
