The suspected crime lord was caught using the ID for a man named Ernesto Plascencia San Vicente and he had 30,000 BRL (6,020 GBP) in cash on his person as well as valuable jewels, according to reports.

Brazilian authorities believe that the Mexican suspect has been living in the country for some years and are currently investigating whether the Juarez Cartel has set up an operation in the area.

Local media said that Bustos used to be the right-hand man of Amado Carrillo Fuentes before his death in 1997.

Fuentes, alias ‘El Senor de los Cielos’ (‘Lord of the Skies’), seized control of the Juarez Cartel after assassinating his boss Rafael Aguilar Guajardo and was the group’s leader until his death.

Police spokesman Wagner Mesquita de Oliveira told local media: “Bustos took care of the runways near the border with Mexico and the US. They handled the planes arriving from Colombia with large quantities of cocaine.”

The Juarez Cartel is based in the city of Ciudad Juarez in the northern Mexican state of Chihuahua which borders with the US.
