Luxury Tesla Model S Burns To A Crisp In Car Park

These images show a Tesla Model S electric car that burst into flames in a car park and was completely destroyed leaving only the wheels and a smouldering pile of plastic and metal.

The white luxury Tesla model reportedly went up in flames on a car park in Ratingen, a town in the district of Mettmann, in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany in the early hours of yesterday morning (Tuesday).

Local residents reported hearing a loud bang and then saw flames coming from the car. When firemen arrived the car was already completely up in flames.

They were able to extinguish the fire but could not prevent the Tesla being totally destroyed and the heat from the fire was so intense that a BMW car parked nearby was also damaged.

Police estimate the total damage at 50,000 EUR (48,000 GBP).

Police are investigating the cause of the incident and the remains of the car are being analysed to try to establish whether a technical defect or another reason was to blame for the fire.

Police were unable to find any clues to the cause of the fire at the scene.

In 2013, the Model S became the first electric car to top the monthly new car sales ranking in any country, reaching the top of the rankings in Norway in September and December 2013.

It is unclear how old the car was or what its exact value was. It is also unclear if Tesla are investigating the incident.
