Hare Accidentally Catches Ride For 400 Miles Stuck Inside Car Bumper

An unlucky hare accidentally hitched a ride for more than 400 miles after it was hit by a car while crossing the road and it got stuck inside the bumper without the driver realising.

Teams from the Volunteer Fire Department in Ustronie Morskie, Poland, received an unexpected call from the Kolobrzeg police asking if they could help free a hare from a car’s bumper.

Upon arrival, they learned that the driver, who was not named in local media, was driving from Silesia when he hit the animal.

However, when he stopped to check if it was alive, it was nowhere to be found.

The man assumed it had escaped and continued his journey.

It was not until 700 kilometres (434 miles) later that he realised there was a creature stuck beneath the car when one of his passengers noticed a tail sticking out from the bumper.

Kamil Gasinski, a volunteer firefighter, said: “The driver called the emergency number, and the police called us.”

To safely extricate the animal, the firefighters had to cut the bumper grille with shears.

The hare reportedly remained calm throughout the 27th May rescue operation.

The firefighters wrapped the animal in a blanket and took it to a veterinary clinic in Ustronie Morskie.

Images show wrapped in the blanket as it gets some care from its rescuers.

It was then taken to a vet, but they later revealed that the animal’s injuries were too severe, and despite the efforts of the rescuers, it did not survive.
