Eurovision Star Conchita Wurst Just Wants To Be Tom

Tom Neuwirth – aka Conchita Wurst – has said he has had enough of his Eurovision Song Contest winning alter ego because she has become “annoying.”

Tom Neuwirth, 30, said: “I need a bit of a break from Conchita. It is like a relationship between the two of us, and she started to annoy me.

“I can be well groomed and tidy and polite. But I can also be irrational, eaten up by my ego, and too much partying.

“At the start of my career I wanted to be Celine Dion. For me I managed to tick that off my list. Then I asked myself, why dont I make the mucis which I like to listen to?

“So Conchita is having a break, but she will be back.”

This Friday, Neuwirth is releasing a new album called ‘Truth Over Magnitude’, which is reportedly quite different to the music produced by his alter ego Conchita. Instead of the usual glittery dresses, Neuwirth can be seen in hoodies and jeans.

At the Eurovision Song Contest in 2014, Conchita sang “Rise Like a Phoenix” and came in 1st. She famously proclaimed upon being given her trophy that “we are unity and we are unstoppable”, propelling her to international stardom.

Following her Eurovision success, she performed onstage at Trafalgar Square in central London as the headline act during the city’s annual LGBT Pride Parade on 28th June 2014.

She told the Observer at the time: “I don’t want to say the other Prides are less good, but I fell in love with London immediately, so today is a very special day for me. All the drag queens looked stunning.”

She has also modelled for Jean-Paul Gaultier and worn Givenchy for the late Karl Lagerfeld.

Two years ago, Neuwirth told German media at the time: “I feel like I want to create a new persona. With the bearded lady, I have achieved everything I’ve wanted since the Eurovision victory.”

Neuwirth added: “I am and always will be Tom. I don’t want to be a woman.

“I love men, but when I dress as Conchita, men don’t interest me. As a drag act, I feel completely asexual.”

In 2018, Neuwirth publicly confirmed that he is HIV positive and has been receiving treatment for years.
