China’s Anti-Corruption Spy Chief Confesses To GBP 27 Million In Bribes

A former Chinese anti-corruption chief at China’s national spy agency has pleaded guilty in court to receiving an astonishing GBP 27 million in bribes.

Liu Yanping, 67, confessed to receiving more than CNY 234 million (GBP 27 million) in bungs as he appeared before the Changchun Intermediate People’s Court, north-east China on 17th November.

Yanping – former head of the Disciplinary Inspection in the Ministry of State Security – is said to have been receiving backhanders from businesses for over 21 years before he confessed.

Grateful businesses showered him with cash and properties, said prosecutors.

Liu Yanping pled guilty and repented in court after all the evidence against him was presented.

At the end of the trial, the court announced an adjournment for a sentencing date.

Yanping was reportedly a member of former public security vice minister Sun Lijun’s political cabal.

Lijun was also tried at the Changchun City Intermediate People’s Court after being charged with receiving CNY 646 million (GBP 75 million) in bribes and was given a death sentence with a two-year reprieve.

Yanping is reportedly the last member of the group to be sentenced, allegedly bringing the biggest purge in China’s security department to a close.
