A curious chimpanzee was caught on video ‘going bananas’ over the sight of a smartphone while a male zoo goer demonstrated how the device worked.
The hilarious interaction was filmed by the man’s female companion, both not named in local media, during a visit to a zoo in Liaoning Province, in north-eastern China.
Video footage shows the man squatting in front of a small glass window outside the chimp’s cage with his phone in his hands.
He beckoned the curious animal and it hurriedly came over and sat on the other side of the glass.
The man then held up his phone and began swiping across the screen as the chimp watched with extreme interest.
It even held its mouth open as if it was shocked by what it was seeing as the man scrolled through various apps.
His friend could barely stop laughing at the sight of the perplexed ape carefully analysing the device with its eyes.

Then, as the man moved to a larger window so the animal could see better, it obediently followed. From there, the ‘teaching moment’ resumed until the footage ended.
The clip quickly went viral on Douyin, China’s version of TikTok. With more than 128,000 likes and over 330,000 shares after the woman posted it on 16th January.
One user, titled ‘oh!’, commented: “Fortunately, I have evolved a long time ago, otherwise I would be the one sitting on the inside gawking at the phone.”
User ‘KL’ wrote: “It has already started plotting to steal the keeper’s cell phone.”
And ‘Xiao Ming’ said: “This chimpanzee looks like a college student.”
