The Italian alcoholic beverage company Campari, who had up until now been its owner, did not specify who the lucky buyer was. But they did say it would be for “private use.”

The price is considerably lower than that which had been estimated at the time it had been put on the market. The Les Cedres villa was sold for 200 million EUR (183 million GBP), which is a lot less than the 300 to 500 million EUR (275 to 457 million GBP) touted by Le Figaro, France’s oldest national daily newspaper, when it was put on sale in 2016.

The villa comes with a 14-hectare botanical garden. It is located in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, which is near Nice and it has been nicknamed “the billionaires’ peninsula”.

The villa was owned by Leopold II, the King of Belgium, from 1904. It was bought up by Alexandre Marnier-Lapostolle, the founder of Grand Marnier, in 1924. Campari had acquired it as part of its takeover of Grand Marnier and all its assets in 2016.

The sale will finally go through and be finalised between now and 31st October 2019 but Campari will only receive 80 million EUR (72.9 million GBP) from the sale, with the rest going to Grand Marnier’s shareholders.
