Women Soldiers Want Sniper And Spec Op Rights

Eight women are suing Russia’s Ministry of Defence because they are not allowed to become snipers or special forces troops.

The outraged women have filed a lawsuit against the Russian National Guard and the Ministry of Defence for not being allowed to serve in a special ops unit, according to the acting head of the National Guard’s Main Organisation and Mobilisation Department Dmitry Virukhin.

Regulations state that women can only be recruited for positions such as cooks, communications operators and technologists, according to Virukhin.

He said: “We have a list of positions which are replaceable. These women filed complaints that they want to serve as snipers. This is not an interchangeable position and is not available for women.”

In addition, women cannot drive tanks or work as mechanics on armoured vehicles.

Over 20,000 women are currently serving their country and the number has steadily been on the rise, according to Virukhin.

The acting head said that some women want to become snipers, but “it is not a female position”.

Female snipers once played a major part for the Soviet army in World War II, eliminating thousands of invading Nazi soldiers.

Lyudmila Pavlichenkova is the most decorated female sniper and is said to have killed 309 Nazis, including 39

enemy snipers.

Last year, the Ministry of Defence resumed the training of female pilots for the first time since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991.
