Police in Poland scrambled to secure a site after wild boar unearthed a batch of unexploded grenades from World War II.
The incident took place near Biecino, in the Pomeranian Voivodeship of northern Poland, when forest rangers found a pile of grenades on the ground in a forest.
The images show the unexploded ordnance, with the grenades having been dug up by wild boar, according to the police.
The Municipal Police Headquarters in Slupsk said in a statement on 17th March: “Officers from the Police Station in Glowczyce secured the place where unexploded ordnance was found, which was dug up by wild boars.”
The police said that despite the grenades being corroded, they still posed a risk to the public.
Military sappers then arrived on the scene and transferred to the explosives to a training ground before detonating them from a safe distance.
Forest guards informed the officers about the find, and police pyrotechnicians confirmed that these were mortar shells from World War II.
A total of 21 shells were recovered from the scene by military sappers.
The statement also said: “Reports of finding unexploded post-war ammunition, despite the fact that several decades have passed since the end of hostilities, are not uncommon.
“Police remind us to be careful and report the discovery of suspicious objects to the nearest police unit. Remember that these objects pose a threat to life and health.”
