Faithful followers say the Virgin Mary appeared on a range of sacred mountains in Colombia.
Photographer Carlos Alzate says the mother of Jesus appeared at the Cerro del Mavecure, three hills above the Inirida River that have been considered sacred for millennia.
The image shows what appears to be a shining white figure standing or floating above a rocky outcrop on the cliff face.
As the sunlight hits it the figure appears to shine with its own light, local media reported on 23rd June.
Alzate, who shared the snap, claimed on social media: “The Virgin Mary appeared to me in the hills.”
Locals say the Mavecure Hills are a natural wonder but also have deep cultural and spiritual meanings for the region’s Puinave people.
The photograph immediately sparked theories that the apparition was a holy sign.
One social media user said: “The Virgin of InĂrida, now the believers are going to arrive.”
Another said: “That is a sign, something.
“It can happen according to the mythological belief of the Puinave people.”
Locals reportedly consider the ‘apparition’ to be a good omen for the local community.
