Selection of toys removed from a dog’s stomach.
The pup was only saved when vets carried out an urgent operation to remove the toys that the white Samoyed dog had wolfed down before being taken ill.
The dog is owned by a family in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, who were not named, and their pet had attacked and eaten 10 toys after finding them lying around the home.
Its owners had not noticed the toys suddenly disappearing but realised something was wrong when the seven-year-old pet fell unwell on 17th July.
They took it to a local vet, where medics performed an X-ray and found what was practically a children’s toy box of items in the dog’s stomach and intestines.
Anna Sidorova, head of the state veterinary clinic, said in a statement: “A decision was made to perform emergency surgery.
“Veterinarians removed all foreign objects from the stomach and intestines. The surgery was successful.”
The dog is currently on IV fluids and is already eating on its own.
The clinic noted that the furry patient remains under observation due to hydronephrosis, a condition where one or both kidneys become swollen.
Kidney problems might have affected the dog’s taste receptors, leading to its fondness for toys. According to the owners, it constantly chewed on them but had never swallowed one before.
Roman Gurinov, a veterinarian at the clinic, explained to local media that it is likely the four-legged patient did not swallow such a large number of inedible items all at once, but accumulated them in its stomach over time.
Gurinov said: “This is a fairly common case; animals often swallow small objects during play.
“There was a case when a Staffordshire Terrier ate a plastic duck, and it was discovered a month later when the dog was operated on.”
The clinic noted that they were collecting a great selection of lost and found items that have been recovered from animal stomachs including toys, shoelaces, glowing balls, and even fishing lures.
