These are the incredible before-and-after photos of a goldfish that underwent surgery to remove a huge tumour that was growing out of its head.

Turek operated on the freshwater fish that he named ‘Ufaklik’ (‘Kiddo’) together with his assistant Ali Sensoy.

After successfully removing the tumour, Turek told local media: “Due to our experience with fish surgery, we became involved in Ufaklik’s case.

“At the moment, the goldfish is quite happy and is eating regularly. These types of operations do not happen often due to the low cost of the fish and the fact that people do not generally value them as a sociable animal.

“Therefore, in most cases, the fish are left to live for as long as they can.

“We believe we are the first people to operate on a goldfish in Turkey.

“We have been praised by our peers and we are extremely pleased with the outcome.”

Turek also said that that anaesthetic is dangerous for a fish with tumours just as it can be for humans, adding: “Luckily, everything went well and Ufaklik is feeling much better.”
