A Mexican TV presenter and journalist has been gunned down while eating breakfast with politicians just a day before his birthday.
Jesus Eugenio Ramos Rodriguez, 55, was killed in a hotel in the municipality of Emiliano Zapata in the state of Tabasco in Mexico.
Jesus, known as ‘Chuchin’, was reportedly having breakfast with the local leader of the political party The National Regeneration Movement (MORENA), Carlos Enrique Campos, and the former Mayor, Armin Marin Sauri.
Minutes before being murdered, the presenter sent a message using a popular messaging service saying: “Good morning to all of you, have an excellent and loyal weekend with family and friends.”
An unidentified gunman then reportedly approached the victim and shot him eight times before escaping in a red car.
After the attack, Rodriguez’s companions rushed him to a local hospital where doctors could do nothing more than declare him dead.
The General Prosecutor’s Office has started an investigation but no arrests have been reported.
The Governor of Tabasco, Adan Augusto Lopez Hernandez, has condemned the crime, saying: “He was a prestigious communicator, he had a programme with a lot of tradition in Zapata and I really regret the loss.”
Rodriguez was the presenter of the popular ‘Nuestra Region’ (‘Our Region’) news programme and is reportedly the second journalist to be murdered in 2019 in Mexico.
It is unclear if Rodriguez had any enemies or whether he was the target of a cartel.
