Newsflash obtained a statement from the Colombian Navy dated 24th March saying: “A unit of the Colombian Navy that was carrying out maritime control operations rescued and released a sea turtle tangled in an artisanal fishing net near the general area of Isla Gorgona, in the Colombian Pacific.

“The crew of the ARC ‘7 de Agosto’ ship spotted the turtle tangled in the net, which prevented it from swimming freely. Immediately, the military personnel arrived at the area and carefully untangled the reptile, cutting the net around its fins and verifying that it was in good condition. Afterwards, the turtle was released and returned to its natural habitat safe and sound.

“Preserving fauna and flora is of great importance to our Colombian sailors, which is why initiatives have been promoted over time to guarantee the well-being and protection of marine species. As a result, the Colombian Pacific is considered a region rich in natural resources, biodiversity, and life.

“The Environmental Strategic Plan of the Colombian Navy PEA 2013-2030 aims to establish compliance and commitment to safeguarding the environment. This function is essential for the preservation of maritime and river interests, with the purpose of contributing to the development and well-being of the country.
