Trio Jailed For Killing Teen Who Fled ISIS

Three man from one family have been jailed for kicking a 15-year-old Syrian refugee to death just months after the youngster escaped the clutches of ISIS.

Two brothers, aged 37 and 26, and their 18-year-old nephew have been convicted of manslaughter by a court in the city of Bremen in north-western Germany.

The brothers, who are of Turkish origin, were both jailed for 12 years while the teenager, a German-Armenian, was sentenced to six years as he was only 16 at the time of the attack.

Their young victim, named only as Odai Kh. due to strict privacy laws, had fled war-torn Syria in the hope of finding a new life with his family in Germany.

He was attacked during a New Year’s Eve party at a Turkish cafe in Bremen’s Luessum neighbourhood by the trio, who cannot be named.

Friends of Odai Kh., a member of Syria’s Yazidi minority, described him to local media as a “cheerful lad who was full of dreams” when he arrived in Europe.

He had wanted to escape the “cruel violence and ethnic cleansing” of the Syrian Civil War and had applied for asylum in Germany.

Odai Kh.’s family had been persecuted by Islamist radicals, like the so-called Islamic State, and were said to be relieved to arrive safely in Bremen.

But the 15-year-old lost his life after the attack in a back room of the Turkish cafe.

Eyewtinesses say Odai Kh. was beaten up, stabbed and repeatedly kicked in the head – with the kicks causing the double skull fracture that claimed his life.

One said: “The 15-year-old was hit by firecrackers. First he threw one back and tried to escape into a cafe. Then it came to a fight, and that was when his assailants took him out.”

Odai Kh. was rushed to hospital where he underwent emergency surgery after doctors put him in a medically-induced coma but he died several days later.
